A small app for the things that matter.
DarkZen is a counter app paired with a small library of essays and a daily quote. Built quietly, used quietly, opened only when you want to.
Why we built DarkZen
Most apps want your attention. They send notifications, light up your home screen, and rank your day on a leaderboard that doesn't exist. We wanted something that did the opposite — an app you could put down and forget about.
DarkZen is built around one observation: when you're working on something — a new habit, a small commitment, a fresh start — the most useful thing an app can do is count the days, and then get out of the way. So that's what DarkZen does.
Alongside the counter, there's a small library of essays — short, readable pieces on focus, discipline, and classical philosophy. They're the kind of thing you might read once on a quiet morning and think about for a week. And a single quote each day on the home screen. That's it.
No coaches, no chat, no notifications, no streak shaming. DarkZen is intentionally small. We'd rather do three things well than fifteen things adequately.
What we believe
Quiet by Default
No notifications, no streaks shaming you, no engagement traps. The app stays out of your way unless you open it.
Yours to Define
DarkZen doesn't tell you what to track. The labels, the meaning, the milestones — they're yours to set.
Privacy First
Counter labels and reset notes are yours. We don't analyze them, sell them, or share them with advertisers.
Built Small
We're not chasing features. DarkZen exists to do three things well — counters, essays, a daily quote — and to keep doing them.
The shape of the app
A counter. A small library of essays. One quote a day. We have no plans to make it bigger, louder, or more demanding of your time. If anything, we'll keep trying to make it smaller.
